Some Calgary trick-or-treaters were met with a bowl full of disposable razor blades this Halloween.
The blue razors were found outside a home in the Bowness area on Thursday night, sitting in a bowl beside a note referencing Prime Minister Justin Trudeau hand-scrawled in black ink on a broken-down piece of cardboard.
“Sorry we can’t afford apples this year because of Trudeau. So this year just razors,” the note reads.

Calgary police confirmed to the National Post that a single report of shaving razors in a bowl was received, but “at this time, there is not enough evidence to indicate a criminal offence occurred.”
A woman who asked to remain anonymous told Calgary radio station 660 NewsRadio that her kids stuck their hands in the bowl, grabbing the shaving razors, but she quickly had them toss them back in.
“You hear of stories … with pins or razors or whatever, but I’ve never come across something like that,” she said.
The economics of the tradeoff were noted by some on X.
“Has anybody priced razor blades lately. Could buy a whole mess of apples,” wrote @ltmcdies.
“The razors were probably more expensive than actual candy would have been. And kids don’t get it,” chimed @bderush.
“Where are they shopping that (taxable) razors are less expensive than (non-taxable) apples? Asking for a hairy but not hungry friend,” posted @imstillthatgirl
At most Canadian retail stores, a 12-pack of generic-brand disposable razors will cost anywhere from $2 to $8 or more. Meanwhile, Statistics Canada says a kilogram of apples costs an average of $5.63 per kilogram as of August 2024, down from $6.08 last August.
